You’d think that the life of a full-time law student consists only of hours of studying, memorizing and more studying, but that’s not how it is for Amira Nur Diana. When she’s not burying her head in another law book, the 20-year old from Kuala Lumpur can be found sitting with her sketch book, working on different forms of drawing, from watercolour art to modern calligraphy and sometimes, digital art.
This passion of hers first started when she was 18. She spent all her savings and allowance on watercolour papers, paints as well as brushes, but looking back there wasn’t an ounce of regret. For what she purchased was more than art materials, it was a way to express herself and communicate with the world.
“For an introverted person like me, I find it much easier to convey messages and spread awareness through art. While my work undoubtedly provides some form of escapism for myself, it is also a way for me to put focus on what matters: the message I wish to spread or the awareness I want to raise. As a full-time student, it also helps that my artworks can be a source of income as I am unable to work part-time.”
This aspiring lawyer and artist knows how to seize an opportunity and make full use of it. Which is why the Kotex SheCan Fund won’t just help her, but others in her community too. To learn new techniques and polish her skills, part of the fund will be put to art classes both online and offline. For the rest of the money that she has, Amira Nur Diana will channel it to venue bookings, art materials and other essentials needed to start her own art class for children aged 8 to 12 years old.
