Durga And Her Passion

Mastering the beautiful art of Silambam, a weapon-based martial art from India has at the same time, grounded and liberated Durga Devi Thamoodran. Having been introduced to Silambam at the young age of five and immediately in love with it, she’s determined to keep the art form alive, by introducing it to future generations. “I love Indian martial arts because it’s part of my tradition. And coming from a younger generation, I believe it’s my responsibility to protect my tradition.”

Durga also credits Silambam for empowering her with a newfound sense of freedom. “Independence and knowing how to protect oneself are two important things for women. As long as we know how to protect ourselves, we can survive in this world.”
