Homosexuals are men or women who fall in love with someone of the same sex. Our homosexual friends or relatives may not readily share their sexual values and preferences with their loved ones due to fear of being judged or rejected. For all you know, they may be suffering silently. Homosexuality is not a disease. Our gay friends may be the most misunderstood persons in a group. Our society today encourages homosexuals to come forward and express themselves.
Q: What makes a man or a woman gay?
A: Some would say that genes, social and cultural factors might explain why men or women become homosexuals. Actually, there is no clear explanation for this. What is important is that, as friends or relatives of gay men or women, we should learn to accept them with a deep and sincere understanding. This will help them come out of their shell. They may need to be educated regarding protecting themselves from sexually transmitted infections and the value of mature and loving relationships.
Q: I am a girl and two years ago I had a crush on this girl in school. I have a boyfriend now. Am I a lesbian?
A: During their teenage years, young girls undergo a certain phase in their life where they start noticing and admiring someone. They may even idolize someone. It may happen that this someone is of the same sex as you. They may have qualities you admire, like a pretty face or a good singing voice, or they may remind you of a celebrity you really like. It is normal to admire persons of the same sex. As you grow older and become more mature, you will overcome this phase. Looking back, you and your friends can only laugh at those memories.
Q: I think my best friend is gay. What should I do?
A: Wait for your friend to open up to you. You may have sensed this or someone may have told you about this. If that is the case, do not confront her just yet. Instead wait for her to begin sharing this aspect of herself with you. You would not want her to feel defensive. She may close herself up and stop communicating if you push her into sharing. At this point, she may not want to talk about it. Just stay with your friend and take good care of the trust she has for you. If she says she wants to talk about it, then you can accompany her to a psychologist or counselor so she may be guided.
Q: Can gay men make a woman pregnant?
A: Some gay men may look and act like women although this may not always be the case. Gay men are still men physically. So if the male sex organ which is the penis is intact, they can still make a woman pregnant when sexual intercourse takes place, provided that other factors such as sex hormones and other sex organs are also functioning properly.
